GATEWAY TO A NEW ERA
DP World's upgrades at Romania's Port of Constanta are reducing EU trade congestion to boost regional economies with better transit routes and digital port solutions.
Case studies
Revolutionising trade at Romania’s port of Constanta
At DP World, we are at the forefront of a significant project at the Port of Constanta, Romania, designed to revolutionise European trade dynamics. This initiative responds to the increasing trade challenges faced by Türkiye, which has seen its exports reach a record high of $254 billion, with a significant 40% of these exports destined for the European Union.
The conventional road route through Bulgaria has become untenable due to severe congestion and delays, with trucks facing queues up to 35 kilometers long at the border. This bottleneck disrupts production schedules, inflates budgets, and forces companies to use expensive airfreight options to meet deadlines.
Compounding these challenges is Europe's truck driver shortage, with a 2022 industry report highlighting an 11% shortfall. This shortage is attributed to factors such as an aging workforce, a talent gap, and the often negative perception of truck driving as a career characterised by long hours, demanding conditions, and extended time away from family. Better alternatives are urgently needed to modernise European trade and overcome these challenges.
Regional Logistics Solutions
In response, we at DP World are reinvigorating the Port of Constanta to serve as a new transit hub, marking a significant shift in regional logistics. Our comprehensive upgrade includes a cutting-edge roll-on, roll-off terminal that seamlessly integrates with existing road and rail networks. Our development of ports and terminals, like in Constanta, substantially reduces congestion issues and delays to streamline trade flows across the region.
The impact of this modernisation extends beyond regional logistics. We anticipate a surge in trade volumes, resulting in higher revenue from customs and fees. This financial boost is expected to enhance public services, healthcare, education, and living standards in the surrounding areas, thereby enriching the social fabric of diverse communities.
Ultimately, our renovation of the Port of Constanta is not just an infrastructural upgrade but a pivotal step towards regional economic and social advancement. By addressing logistical hurdles and stimulating trade, this project reflects our dedication to improving not just the flow of goods and supply chain solutions, but also the quality of life for both local and international communities.
